Let’s Talk Fall Haircuts Because the Right One Changes Everything

Fall is the season for a life reset, and that goes for your hair, too.

When the weather shifts, so do our routines. Our outfits get cozier, the air gets drier, and suddenly, that summer haircut you were loving starts to feel… off. This is when I start getting a ton of messages from clients (and followers) asking:

“What’s a good fall haircut for my hair right now?”

So I decided to break it all down here.

If you have seen my viral fall haircut video on Instagram, this post is the full breakdown of the three exact haircuts I shared, layer by layer, bang by bang.

I’m giving you the full stylist’s guide. What each cut looks like, who it works best for, how I’d style it, and what to ask your hairstylist so it turns out exactly how you want.

Whether you’re someone who always gets a fall chop or you’re just bored with your current style and want a little inspo, this blog post has you covered.

Let’s find the fall haircut that feels like you.

Here’s How to Pick a Fall Haircut That Fits Your Hair Type

The biggest mistake I see? Choosing a haircut just because it’s trending, without thinking about whether it works for your hair type.

The right haircut should work with your texture, especially in fall, when the air gets drier and hair starts acting... different.

Let me break down how I help my clients choose the right fall cut based on their natural texture. Whether you wear your hair styled every day or like to air-dry and go, these are the kinds of cuts that stun every time.

If You’ve Got Straight Hair

You’ll want to add some movement, so:

  • Go for blunt or slightly textured ends to keep it sleek but not lifeless.

  • Face-framing layers or curtain bangs work so well with straight hair, just enough shape without high maintenance.

  • If you like volume, ask your stylist to point-cut the ends or add invisible layering to give it more body.

If You’ve Got Wavy Hair

This is your season. Fall hair works so well with a little wave and softness.

  • Long, blended layers are your best friend, especially if you like air-drying.

  • Try a soft curtain bang or face frame that blends into your layers. It’s low-commitment but changes the look.

  • Avoid razor cuts if your hair is dry or frizz-prone; ask for slide cutting or soft texturizing instead.

If You’ve Got Curly or Coily Hair

Fall can be tricky for curls. Between the dryness and static, you need a shape that holds up.

  • Ask for a structured shape with intentional volume, rounded layers, not random ones.

  • Protective styles still work with cuts! You can get long layers that peek through twists or braids.

  • Face-framing layers can make a huge difference in giving your curls definition. Just make sure they’re customized to your curl pattern.

These Are the Fall Haircuts I Wore (Everyone on Insta Saving Them Right Now)

These are the exact three haircuts I featured in my viral fall haircut video, and yep, I’ve worn all of them in real life. I’m walking you through each one with all the pro-level details: where the layers start, what kind of bangs are best, and who each cut works for.

So if you’ve been screenshotting inspo pics or hovering over the “book now” button, this is the section you’ll want to save.

Fall Haircut 1: The Feathered Collarbone Cut

Front look of The Feathered Collarbone Cut

This cut is soft, easy, and polished without looking overdone. It works well if you like blowouts or curling the ends under for a super clean finish. I also love how the front layering adds shape without removing too much length, only if you’re not ready to go shorter.

Side Look of The Feathered Collarbone Cut

Who It Suits Best: Perfect for straight to wavy hair with medium density. Ideal if you want to add shape and movement around the face without committing to layers throughout. A great low-maintenance option that still feels styled.

What to Ask Your Stylist:

Length: About 2 inches below the collarbone

Back: Keep it straight across with lightly textured ends

Front: Add long face-framing layers with the shortest piece just above the lip

Pro Tip

Ask for interior texturizing, not choppy layering, if you want the ends to feel lighter without losing bluntness at the bottom.

Fall Haircut 2: Chest-Length Shag with Curtain Bangs

Front look of Chest-Length Shag with Curtain Bangs

This one’s got a little edge to it. It gives movement and dimension if you’ve got thicker hair and want to remove bulk. And the short curtain bangs? Chef’s kiss. They’re dramatic enough to change your face shape, but still easy to grow out if you change your mind.

Side look of Chest-Length Shag with Curtain Bangs

Who It Suits Best: Best for thick or heavy hair, naturally wavy or voluminous textures, and anyone who wears their hair down often.

What to Ask Your Stylist:

Length: Sits right above the chest

Back: Straight base with long layers that start just below the shoulders

Front: Short curtain bangs paired with face-framing layers

Pro Tip

Curtain bangs grow fast. Ask your stylist to start them around your brow bone so they last longer before needing a trim.

Fall Haircut 3: Effortless Layers + Medium Curtain Fringe

Front Look of Effortless Layers + Medium Curtain Fringe

This is a great “in between” cut if you want something low-maintenance but still put-together. The medium curtain bangs blend perfectly into the rest of the cut, so there’s no harsh front section. Plus, it looks amazing with a claw clip or waves. Super wearable for day-to-day life.

Side Look of Effortless Layers + Medium Curtain Fringe

Who It Suits Best: Best for all hair types (yep, really), medium to long lengths, and anyone who wants a little movement without high styling effort.

What to Ask Your Stylist:

Length: Around 2 inches below the shoulders

Back: Long layers with a straight-across base

Front: Medium-length curtain bangs and soft, blended face-framing

Pro Tip

Blend your curtain bangs into your shortest face-framing layer. That way, they won’t feel like a separate style, and they’ll grow out smoother.

Fall Hair Colours That Make Your Cut Look Stunning

You don’t have to colour your hair in fall, but if you’ve been thinking about it? This is the time to go for it. It adds depth, shine, and just pulls the whole look together when you’re layering up in cozy knits and deeper makeup tones.

Here are the shades I’m loving (and recommending to clients) this fall:

Caramel Balayage

Back view of long, wavy brunette hair with caramel balayage highlights, styled in soft, flowing waves inside a modern salon.

Soft, warm, and super low-maintenance. This tone adds glow to darker brunettes without the constant upkeep. It also plays well with natural textures when styled with waves or curls. Ask for face-framing caramel ribbons to brighten the front without touching your roots.

Cinnamon Brunette

This one’s subtle but stunning. If you want a rich, fall-inspired tone that’s not too red, cinnamon gives that warmth without leaning copper. Perfect with the Feathered Collarbone Cut or the Effortless Layers, as it adds dimension through the mid-lengths.

Chocolate Brown with Gloss

Side view of mid-length layered hair in a rich chocolate brown shade with a glossy finish, styled with voluminous blowout layers and curtain bangs.

Sometimes all you need is a tonal refresh. A high-gloss brunette with a hint of espresso or warm cocoa can make your cut look shinier, healthier, and way more intentional. Ask for a demi-permanent gloss, you’ll get the richness without a full-colour change.

Soft Copper or Auburn

Back view of medium-length wavy hair in a vibrant soft copper or auburn shade, styled in loose waves with a smooth, shiny finish inside a salon setting.

If you’re ready for a bolder switch, copper is still having its moment. In fall lighting, it glows. Just know this one does require maintenance to stay vibrant. Use a colour-safe, sulphate-free shampoo to avoid fading too fast.

Easy Fall Hairstyles for Your New Cut

Once you’ve got the cut (and maybe the colour), you’re probably wondering:

“Okay, but how do I style this without spending 45 minutes every morning?”

Fall is the season of layering, hot drinks, and let’s be honest, not washing your hair every day. These are my go-to fall styles that work with all three haircuts I shared earlier.

They’re quick, cute, and make your haircut look intentional even when you’re in a rush.

Loose Waves with a Middle Part

A woman with long, loose waves and a sleek middle part, featuring glossy dark brown hair and polished makeup, seated in a modern indoor setting.

This one’s a no-brainer for long layers or curtain bangs. Use a large-barrel curling iron or wand, and curl away from your face. Let the curls cool, then brush them out for a soft, voluminous finish. Spray a lightweight texture spray or dry shampoo at the roots for volume.

Half-Up Claw Clip Twist

A woman with long, beachy blonde waves styled in a half-up twist secured with a neutral-toned claw clip, wearing an off-the-shoulder white top and standing outdoors in natural sunlight.

Perfect for second or third-day hair. Leave a few face-framing pieces out if you’ve got bangs, and twist the top half back with a claw clip. It goes perfectly with Feathered Collarbone Cut (adds that effortless vibe) and Effortless Layers with Curtain Fringe.

Waterfall Braid or Loose Side Braid

Back view of long, loosely curled blonde hair styled in an elegant waterfall braid, with pieces cascading into soft waves, set against a bright vanity background.

Braids look so good with face-framing layers. They give a soft, romantic look and can elevate your outfit when you’re wearing a turtleneck or scarf. If your layers are short and keep falling out of the braid, spray your fingers with hairspray while braiding. It helps grip those flyaways without overloading your hair with product.

Textured Slick-Back Bun

Close-up of a woman with a sleek, textured slick-back bun, dewy makeup, and gold hoop earrings, set against a softly lit indoor-outdoor background.

This one’s so underrated. Add a little texture spray through your roots, part your hair in the middle or deep side, and slick it back into a bun or low ponytail. Great for a more polished vibe without heat styling. Looks amazing on all hair types, but especially nice with shaggy layers or curtain bangs as it adds contrast between sleek and texture.
